Small Milestones, Big Transformations

Five-year-old Christolene’s journey at St Joseph’s is a gentle reminder of the life-changing difference kindness can make. Admitted to St Joseph’s in 2021Christolene has been surrounded by a team committed to helping her thrive. She has severe developmental delays and a long list of antenatal and postnatal complications and has spent her entire life in hospitals or medical facilities with very little family contact. In 2023, she presented with a visual impairment but was unable to access the spectacles she urgently needed. Thanks to the support and advocacy of the St Joseph’s clinical team, together with the generosity of partner NGO OneSightChristolene received a brand-new pair of glasses that has opened her world.

Her profound developmental delays affected her confidence and ability to interact with others. Determined to give Christolene the gift of confidence and connection, the Child and Youth Care Workers created a bespoke play therapy programme, filled with games, dancing, singing, storytelling and gentle opportunities for communication and engagement.

Since then, Christolene has begun reaching for crayons, strengthening her fine motor skills, playing with dolls, and making encouraging communication progress. She now uses simple signs like ‘wash’ and ‘more’ to express herself, and has even started using words like “mama”.

These small milestones speak to a much bigger transformation. Because of compassionate care and support, a little girl who once faced overwhelming barriers is now discovering, connecting, and blooming.
